These exploits can result in data leakage, site defacement and other attacks by hackers that compromise both the privacy and integrity of vital data. Web site protection capabilities include: HTTP protocol compliance, protection against common/high-visibility attacks, protection against attacks based on session state, online form field validation, outbound data theft protection, Web site cloaking, anti-Web crawling and application denial of service (DoS) protection, as well as fine-grain controls.
  • Application Access Control: The Barracuda Web Application Firewall provides PKI support to provide certificate verification and prevents cookie tampering to ensure hidden or read-only form fields are not changed by the user.
  • Application Delivery and Acceleration: In addition to the security and access control benefits of Barracuda Web Application Firewall, there are also additional operational capabilities. Capabilities include SSL offloading, SSL acceleration, load balancing and high availability.
  • Logging, Monitoring and Reporting: The Barracuda Web Application Firewall features advanced capabilities to provide immediate feedback to operations teams that deploy, manage and secure mission critical applications. Besides a system log, Web firewall log, traditional Web log and audit log, the Barracuda Web Application Firewall also provides specific reports relevant to PCI compliance.

Conclusion:

CRN Test Center Awards the Barracuda Web Filter with a “Recommended” Rating, 5 Tech Stars and 4 Channel Stars

There's no question that spyware is bad. At the very least, it hogs network bandwidth, and at worst, it gives remote control of the computer to a third party. So what's a proactive IT administrator to do?

Barracuda Networks' Web Filter 310 uses content filtering and application blocking to protect networks from viruses and spyware. Originally called the Barracuda Spyware Firewall, the company renamed the product to reflect its extensive feature set and capabilities. Despite being heavy on the features, (Barracuda) Web Filter 310 remains easy to use and fully customizable.

The appliance prevents new spyware and virus infections from penetrating the network. It takes a multilayered approach to blocking spyware sites, downloads and protocols. For example, spyware is automatically blocked if it comes from a URL previously determined to be malicious.

Barracuda (Networks) has identified 57 predefined categories ranging from blatant offenders such as porn sites to less-blatant ones such as gambling sites. Along with reputation scoring, (Barracuda) Web Filter blocks sites using domain names, predefined categories, URL patterns and MIME type. (Barracuda) Web Filter also performs binary content scanning on all files coming in to detect spyware in realtime.

Priced at $1,999, Barracuda Web Filter was a snap to deploy and performed well without complexity. Since it can be placed in front of or behind the firewall, CRN Test Center engineers installed the unit in front of the firewall for testing purposes. The appliance blocked Web sites that had embedded spyware or tried to download spyware onto the test computer. Even better, the appliance detected spyware as it was phoning home on the test machine and prompted engineers to download and run the Barracuda Spyware Removal tool, an ActiveX control tool. By making the tool immediately available to the user as soon as the infection is detected, the problem is resolved quickly. In addition, because it's an online tool, administrators do not need to preload the tool on all affected client machines.

Although the device's strength lies in blocking spyware, it also blocks unauthorized Web sites, viruses, adware, malicious Web content and unauthorized applications. (Barracuda) Web Filter 310 can also block peer-to-peer services, IM, file downloads, Web-based e-mail, music sites, proxies and chat sites.

Barracuda (Networks) managed to avoid a common trap that other vendors blocking sites based on URL patterns and domain names often fall into: Engineers noticed that while the Barracuda Web Filter blocked porn sites, the appliance allowed oft-banned yet innocent to pass through, such as breast cancer education sites or sites that have trigger words embedded within their otherwise innocuous names.

This product also can set up and enforce Internet usage policies, such as restricting access to certain sites and limiting personal surfing during work hours. The system is LDAP-enabled, giving administrators a way to create and assign policy-driven rules based on individual users or group accounts.

Next: The Bottom Line The (Barracuda) Web Filter appliance does not have separate management software but relies on a Web interface to the administration console. Once the appliance is configured during initial setup with an IP address, gateway and DNS information (using a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged directly into the unit), administrators access the console via a Web browser from any computer on the network. The console, laid out in multitabbed Web pages, is packed with features, and almost every option can be customized. Administrators can immediately test changes made to filtering categories, whitelists and blacklists from within the console.

The most recent firmware update, version 3.1, expands the unit's reporting capabilities. Under this version, administrators can view log history and see reports on user behavior, historical traffic patterns, bandwidth usage, domain requests and Web site categorization. Designed to store approximately six months of traffic history, (Barracuda) Web Filter also can drill down from summary reports for further analysis. Administrators can enable syslog messages through the Web console to log what happens to each traffic request performed by users to a text file.

For existing customers running (Barracuda) Web Filter with pre-3.1 firmware, the upgrade is very straightforward. The Test Center received a pre-3.1 appliance and upgraded to 3.1 using the admin console within minutes.

Capacity varies by the model in the Barracuda Web Filter family. The (Barracuda) Web Filter 310 can support 200 concurrent users, making it ideal for SMBs or branch offices. The high-end 910 model can support 4,500 concurrent users and has hot-swappable RAID and power supplies.

Barracuda Central, the company's technology center, automatically pushes down hourly updates of antispyware rules on to the unit. Energize Updates, as they are called, include databases for spyware removal, signature, Web sites and protocols, as well as antivirus definitions and content filters. As a troubleshooting feature, the unit also can open up a tunnel session with Barracuda Central.

Measuring 16.7 inches wide x 1.7 inches high x 14 inches deep, the steel-black unit is emblazoned with a blue panel in the front corner. It is 1U high, comparable to competitive products. Weighing 17 pounds, the appliance is sleek and attractive.

The 310 model comes with ports for connecting a standard VGA monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a serial port, several USB ports and three Ethernet ports. One Ethernet port is located at the back of the unit and is used specifically for management. The LAN and WAN ports are located at the front of the unit. The front panel also contains the power button, the reset button and five indicator lights marking power, disk activity, cleaning activity and data transmission.

The company is channel-friendly, claiming more than 90 percent of its sales are driven through partners. Its channel program has five levels. There are no requirements to join at the lowest level, but there are high revenue goals to sustain the top-level discounts.

Barracuda (Networks) estimates a 10 percent margin at the low end for solution providers. Other revenue opportunities include ongoing subscriptions. Partners interested in reselling premium services are required to undergo training.

All resellers can offer basic support, but only certified resellers can offer in-depth support. Otherwise, Barracuda (Networks) handles the rest of technical support, including on-site premium programs. It also has an instant replacement service, where the new unit is shipped next business day.

Star Power: Redmond Readers' Choice Awards 2007

You voted for our annual Best of the Best and the results are in: Find out which products you’ve chosen as the cream of the crop.

Life certainly is not getting any easier for those of you battling down in the IT trenches. You have to get all the pieces working smoothly together, as well as keep the trains running on time, protect your systems from outside threats and from within your own network, be ready to produce a year’s worth of e-mail archives on demand, and do so on a budget that has most likely been cut or -- if you’re lucky -- stayed the same since last year.

The Readers’ Choice Awards highlight the tools you use to get all that done. Your voice has been fairly consistent from year to year. Many of the same solutions that have won in previous years fill out this year’s roster of honorees. In short, it seems like you’ve found what works and you’re sticking with it. That sentiment was frequently echoed with comments like Neal Zimmerman’s thoughts on Microsoft Operations Manager: “It’s a familiar product with a long history.”

Once again, there were many close races between third-party tools in the bread-and-butter categories like network management, application management, performance management and general network monitoring. Microsoft still dominates many of these categories, but it’s comforting to see several solid alternatives still remain.

The virtual server and virtual PC categories weren’t as close as they’ve been in previous years. No longer running neck and neck or trading the lead with Microsoft, VMware took both categories by a healthy margin.

The one single product that earned the greatest number of votes this year was Mozilla’s Firefox browser. Looks like from here on in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 will have its work cut out for it if it plans to continue its domination of the browser wars.

Ghost, which won the largest number of individual votes the last two years, was the second highest vote-earner this year. It’s still far and away the favorite tool for disk imaging, though, especially with the release of the Ghost Solution Suite 2.0.

Overall, Symantec is the preferred alternative in most of the security, storage and backup categories. The company won in Drive Imaging, Anti-Virus Tool, Backup, Storage Management and Disaster Recovery. It placed in Compliance Tools, Group Policy Manager, Firewall (both hardware- and software-based), Intrusion Prevention System and Secure Messaging Tool. You can bet Redmond is keeping a careful eye on Cupertino.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the winners of this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

Management Muscle
Once again, Microsoft’s management tools earned sweeping victories in the fundamental management and monitoring categories. The company took top honors in not one, but two categories for Best Network Management Product. Microsoft Systems Management Server collected 16 percent of the votes and Microsoft Operations Manager (known as “MOM,” and soon to be renamed System Center Operations Manager) earned 15.4 percent.

Financial dynamics aside, ease of integration is the key issue most often cited for using Microsoft’s system management tools. “[MOM] is highly extensible for application, server and network management,” says independent consultant Luke Edson.

“MOM 2005 has been a great asset,” says Christopher Owens, IT manager at the Southeast Missouri Community Treatment Center. “Being a single IT guy for 22 servers, it’s certainly helped me narrow down problems and take care of them before they get bigger. I plan on installing System Center Operations Manager as soon as possible.”

As you might expect, many organizations on Software Assurance or some other license arrangement find it most cost-effective to run an all-Microsoft shop. That being the case, we established the ISV Winner award (see “Survey Methodology”) to level the playing field as best we can and recognize the most viable alternatives for network monitoring and management.

HP OpenView still has many fans for being a flexible system. OpenView garnered 8.8 percent of the vote to take the ISV Winner award for Best Network Management Product. “It maps all applications to specific hardware and provides a true picture of what is impacted from an incident,” says John DelRey of the Bank of New York.

Cliff Brown of Micro Area Networks prefers OpenView for its scalability, relatively small footprint, openness to existing networks and ease of operation. “I was able to navigate OpenView within a few minutes due to its front-end layout,” he says. Rounding out the category is Cisco Systems LAN Management Suite, earning 8.1 percent of the votes, and the Altiris Management Suite, taking 7.3 percent.

Microsoft also dominated Best Application Management Product, with MOM taking 26.8 percent of the votes. “It provides solid information. It’s a familiar product with a long history,” says Neal Zimmerman, an independent trainer who runs NJZ Training Services.

The ISV Winner is LANDesk with 8.5 percent. Stephen Kulyk of UPS Freight appreciates LANDesk’s ease of use and bandwidth throttling during deployment. Novell’s ZENworks placed with 6.4 percent and ScriptLogic’s Desktop Authority MSI Studio finished third, garnering 4.7 percent of the votes.

The Best Performance Management Product is MOM, with 27.2 percent. HP’s OpenView also emerged as the ISV Winner in this category with 8.2 percent of the votes. SolarWinds’ Orion Network Performance Monitor earned 8.0 percent and NetIQ’s AppManager captured 6.8 percent.

Continuing its reign, MOM remains the Best General Network Monitoring Tool, with a 16.8 percent tally. This category’s ISV Winner is Cisco Systems, with its Syslog Analyzer earning 8.5 percent of the votes.

“Cisco does networking better than anyone,” says Billy Collins of Aaron Nickel Homes. Independent consultant Joe Reddix appreciates Syslog Analyzer’s richness of features. Also in this category is HP’s OpenView Operations for Windows, gathering 8.1 percent of the vote, with IBM’s Tivoli NetView grabbing 5.3 percent.

Come Together
Interoperability continues to be a big issue. Getting Windows to play nice and cohabitate with Linux and Unix isn’t always easy, but there are several strong tools that are helping ease that pain.

The MKS Toolkit wins here with a commanding 19 percent of the votes. This one is Cliff Brown’s favorite solution. “One word: Unix. Make that four words: architectural support for Windows.” Centrify’s DirectControl earned 7.9 percent of the votes and Centeris’ Likewise was right behind with 7.8 percent.

The race for Best Bandwidth/Traffic Monitoring Product was fairly close. Lightspeed Systems Total Traffic Control won with 14.1 percent of the vote. Network Instruments Observer was a step behind with a 12.2 percent share and Argent Guardian earned 11.7 percent.

Web usage monitoring is another critical, yet contentious, issue. Some companies monitor their employees’ browsing habits and some do not. The Best Web Usage Monitor this year is Websense Enterprise with a strong 25.1 percent of the votes. “It’s the best engine for discovering Web page content and blocking accordingly,” says Benjamin Crill of Core BTS.

SurfControl Web Filter earned 16.7 percent and has a solid core of fans. “It generates accurate and timely reports that can be used for traffic management as well as disciplinary activities related to employee use violations, among others,” says independent consultant Chris Apgar.

The full Websense Security Suite also placed in this category with 6.0 percent. Some readers simply question the overall value of Web monitoring. “None of these products are great. They all have issues,” says Prescott Small, IT manager at a manufacturing firm. “Websense just has the fewest problems.”

Watching budget dollars means knowing where every piece of equipment is located. That’s easier said than done, especially when dealing with multiple locations and platforms. The Altiris Asset Management Suite is the favored Asset Management/ Resource Inventory Product with 20 percent of the votes. Novell Asset Manager came in with 9.3 percent, and Altiris Inventory Solution earned 6.5 percent of the votes. Readers like how it doesn’t bog you down while it’s working. “[Inventory Solution] does a good job of taking the inventory without taking too many available resources,” says Phil Murphy of BrassCraft-Thomasville.

The Best License Management Product is another Microsoft-dominated category, with Microsoft Systems Management Server gathering a whopping 39.2 percent of the votes. The Altiris Compliance Suite is the ISV winner with 11.4 percent. Altiris Provisioning Suite is next with 4.4 percent, followed by iInventory with 3.9 percent

NetIQ’s Security Compliance Suite continues to be the preferred set of compliance tools, an increasingly important part of any company’s infrastructure. NetIQ won with 14.5 percent. Symantec’s BindView collected 9.9 percent and Shavlik NetChk Compliance took 8.8 percent.

The virtual races have taken an interesting turn. VMware this year edged ahead in what has historically been a neck and neck race with Microsoft. This year’s Best Virtual Server Product is VMware GSX Server with 42.8 percent. Microsoft’s Virtual PC followed with 32.6 percent. VMware’s ESX Server is also in there with 6.4 percent.

“[ESX Server] is still the leading product and with good reason,” says Brent Eads, a consultant with Employee Technology Solutions Inc. “It works extremely well.”

The Best Virtual PC Product is VMware Workstation by a hefty margin, bringing in 45 percent of the votes. Microsoft Virtual PC pulled in 34.1 percent, with SWsoft’s Virtuozzo earning 1 percent.

Microsoft, however, still has its loyal legions on the virtual front. “Virtual PC is a good all-around product,” says BrassCraft-Thomasville’s Murphy. “I didn’t like VMware Workstation for the fact that you have to buy it, plus it appeared to be a bit more complicated to configure and use.”

The Best Non-Microsoft Browser is also the product that earned the single highest number of votes: Firefox collected a commanding 69.2 percent.

“Firefox has less problems and less security risks than IE,” says Gamal Herbon of InterComputer. “It’s easier to use, has better features and doesn’t try to take over the world.” Netscape Navigator earned 6.0 percent.

SQL users have a clear favorite when it comes to tools to help them get the most out of SQL Server. The Best SQL Tool is Sql Power Tools with 24.7 percent. Quest Spotlight on SQL took 8.9 percent, and Red Gate Software 7.1 percent.

Installation and Administration
The act of getting your systems ready for a new rollout or upgrade is going to be front of mind this year with so many organizations getting ready for Vista. It’s just a matter of whether you plan to do it now or later. These tools will help ease the transition, software distribution, software packaging and drive imaging -- all essential tasks for deploying or upgrading your systems.

Drive Imaging
Once again, Symantec’s Ghost Suite leads this category by a huge margin. It wins this year with 55 percent of the votes. “It puts me in control and allows me to install unsupervised,” says Bruce Norris, IT manager for a government agency. “It also has low bandwidth usage.” Acronis True Image showed it still has a solid base, grabbing 14.3 percent. Altiris Migration Suite earned a 5.1 percent vote.

Server Migration
Altiris Deployment Solution is also well suited for server migration, winning this category with 14.8 percent of the votes. Quest Software Migration Suite for AD/Exchange was a hair behind with 14.5 percent. The Altiris Client Management Suite also placed with a 6.5 percent vote.

Group Policy Manager
Obviously, Microsoft is going to be the best at managing Group Policy, but there are several solid alternatives. Microsoft wins here with a sweeping 41.6 percent. Leading as the ISV Winner is ScriptLogic with Active Administrator, earning an 8.8 percent vote. NetIQ’s Group Policy Administrator got 5.8 percent and Symantec’s BindView brought in 3.5 percent.

Disk Defragmentation and Drive Monitoring
Diskeeper wins this category again this year with a 29.6 percent vote. “It does the job and each version gets better,” says Barry Cohen of the Edison Group. Within viewing distance is Winternals Defrag Manager with 21.8 percent, with Raxco PerfectDisk finishing a more distant third with 5.8 percent. There figures to be much more room for both Diskeeper and Raxco in next year’s competition, as Winternals was sold to Microsoft late last year.

Remote Troubleshooting
This category was a fairly close race. Altiris Carbon Copy wins with an 11.1 percent share of the vote. NetSupport Manager was second with 9.2 percent and Netopia Timbuktu brought in 8.1 percent.

Network Automation and Batch Processing
ScriptLogic Desktop Authority is the clear winner here, bringing in 20.5 percent of the vote. Readers like the “one-stop shopping” aspect of a comprehensive tool like Desktop Authority. “It pretty much does everything from one console, and it’s very easy to use,” says Russ Johnson of the Family Health Center of Battle Creek, Mich. HP OpenView Operations for Windows crossed the line second with 12.4 percent, and MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers was third with 5.6 percent.

Scripting
Scripters are an intensely loyal lot. Once they’ve found a tool that works, they’re not likely to change. Sapien maintains its lead this year with PrimalScript gathering a 16.4 percent vote. “It’s fantastic for debugging scripts,” says Rajni Mistry of Titanium Solutions Ltd. “It gives you total control.” iTripoli Admin Script Editor is close behind with 10.4 percent of the votes, and XLnow OnScript brought in 7.5 percent.

Patch Management
For something as critical as patch management, Microsoft Software Update Services is proving tough to beat, winning a 42.5 percent share. Shavlik Technologies is the ISV winner with its HFNetChkPro earning 7.4 percent. Altiris Patch Management Solution brought in 5.8 percent and PatchLink Update earned 3.2 percent.

Safe and Secure
Terrorists, spam, viruses, worms, spyware and malicious employees: they all know more ways to kill you than you know ways to die, and these threats seem to multiply every day. You need a solid security infrastructure to keep today’s threats at bay -- in both the physical and virtual worlds.

Firewall: Hardware-based
The Cisco Systems PIX series has proved it can consistently evolve and continues to win in this market. It wins here with a 38.8 percent vote. Ease of use, ease of integration and its position as the de facto industry standard were all frequently cited as reasons for choosing Cisco. “Cisco has been in the game a long time and knows what to do when protection is needed,” says Bud Moore of the Tracer Corp. SonicWALL’s TZ and Pro series firewalls brought in a 10 percent vote, while Symantec’s Velociraptor earned 7.7 percent.

Firewall: Software-based
Microsoft’s ISA Server is the clear winner with 22.2 percent of the votes. After ISA Server’s dominance as a software firewall, Check Point and Symantec are in a fairly close matchup, earning 15.8 and 14.5 percent, respectively. Check Point, emerging as the ISV Winner, wins points for being easy to remotely manage, says Ralph Hoefelmeyer. McAfee Personal Firewall Plus brought in 8.3 percent.

Intrusion Detection System
Cisco Systems’ Cisco Secure IDS is a decisive winner with 20.9 percent of the votes. Open source alternative Snort brought in a 13.1 percent vote. BlackICE Pro, from Network ICE, earned 6.8 percent.

Intrusion Prevention System
Cisco Systems also takes the IPS category with its Cisco Security Agent bringing in a 15.4 percent vote. Network Associates IntruShield is up next with 7.3 percent. The next spot is a tie between Symantec ManHunt and Internet Security Systems, each earning a 5.1 percent vote.

Smart Card/Biometric/Two-factor Authentication System
RSA ran away with the votes for Best Smart Card Authentication System with its SecureID earning 35.3 percent. It helps that they’ve been around for such a long time and have refined the product and developed a solid reputation. “They’re a trusted vendor and it’s a workable product that limits false positives and false negatives,” says independent consultant Chris Apgar. DigitalPersona brought in 3.5 percent and the next place was a 3.2 percent tie between ActivCard Trinity and Griffin Technologies SecuriKey Pro.

Secure Messaging Tool or Service (Spam and Content Filtering)
Microsoft Exchange Server takes this category with a 17.6 percent vote. The ISV Winner is Symantec with a 7.8 percent vote. Microsoft Antigen (now Forefront) earned 4.7 percent and Barracuda Networks’ Spam Firewall brought in 3.8 percent.

Anti-Virus
Symantec also took a commanding lead in the anti-virus category, thanks to its Anti-Virus tool, which earned 33.8 percent of the vote. “It catches virtually all viruses in real-time and requires very little maintenance,” says Dan Roach, IT manager with Dunn Engineering Associates. McAfee’s GroupShield took 14.9 percent and Trend Micro 11.4 percent.

Anti-Spyware
McAfee takes top honors here with 15.1 percent of the votes, with Trend Micro Anti-Spyware trailing closely behind with a 12.1 share. Webroot places again with a 9.7 percent vote.

To Store and To Protect
Storage and backup are two other areas in which Symantec is particularly strong. The Cupertino-based company won or placed repeatedly in the three key categories of backup, storage management and disaster recovery.

Backup System
Symantec/Veritas Backup Exec cleaned up in this category with 28.2 percent of the vote. The company also took the next spot with Symantec/ Veritas NetBackup earning 11.8 percent. The final spot was a tie between CA BrightStor Enterprise Backup and Acronis True Image, each earning 5.8 percent.

Disaster Recovery Product
Symantec/Veritas took the top two spots here with Backup Exec in first with a 15.4 percent of the vote and NetBackup with 9.3 percent. Winternals Recovery Manager got 6.7 percent.

Barracuda Web Filter Receives 5 Stars and "Recommended" Rating from SC Magazine’s Web Filtering Group Test

This product was one of the two best of those we reviewed. It is solid, easy to use and well documented. The Barracuda Web Filter blocks access to websites based on content, content category, domain or URL. Supplied as an appliance, this is an attractive proposition for the enterprise market, designed for simple administration and high throughput.

The device provides a wide variety of internet access options, allowing real granularity when it comes to policy development and application. For example, employees may be grouped, with each team having different web access rights.

Barracuda Web Filter belongs to the class of products referred to as "clientless". This means there is no client software required on the user's desktop or laptop. We found the tool's performance to be first rate, with filters available for URLs based on category, pattern, domain or specific URL.

It integrates with the SafeSurf rating standard, providing protection when using typical image search tools. It can block selected file types, instant messaging and other applications.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall can be installed in front of the email server in typically less than five minutes and is automatically updated hourly to block new forms of spam and viruses. Its architecture leverages open source spam and virus solutions in conjunction with ten defense layers: denial of service and security protection, IP block list, rate control, virus check with archive decompression, proprietary virus check, user specified rules, spam fingerprint check, Intent Analysis, spam rule-based scoring, and Bayesian analysis. In addition, the entire Barracuda Spam Firewall line features simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering with the inclusion of sophisticated outbound email filtering techniques such as rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, dual layer virus blocking and remote user support for outbound email filtering. The Barracuda Spam Firewall’s layered approach minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Unlike software solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall reduces the load placed on the email server by off-loading both spam and virus filtering. Barracuda Spam Firewall named “Readers’ Choice” by Redmond Magazine

The Best of the Best: Redmond's 2006 Readers' Choice Awards

Find out how your favorite tools fared in more than 40 categories.

Every day, you deal with spyware, hackers, integration issues, patch management, regulatory compliance and passwords. You're monitoring Web access, monitoring performance and all the while monitoring your budget. The stakes are high and mistakes are costly, both in terms of dollars and job security. Sitting in the IT hot seat these days is a delicate balancing act: You're part techie, part diplomat, part detective, part business manager and part magician.

You need to have absolute trust in the tools you're using. You're the one on the front lines, so we turn to you to help us determine the best of the best in dozens of product categories. What are the tools you use every day to keep your networks running smoothly? What is helping you keep hackers, spammers and spyware at bay? How do you keep an eye on all your systems to make sure there's no trouble? There are a lot of choices, and making the best choice is critical.

Here's a detailed look at how the best of the best stacked up in every category. These are the tools and utilities you use every day to keep your systems running.

Back to Basics
Network management, application management, network monitoring -- these are the basics, the absolutely essential categories. The leaders in these categories read like a Who's Who of the technology industry -- trusted vendors with a long, healthy track record of proven technologies.

For best network management product, Microsoft Systems Management Server and Microsoft Operations Manager took the top two spots with 23.5 percent and 16.7 percent of the votes, respectively. HP Openview was the ISV winner with 13.8 percent of the votes. Close behind HP was Cisco's LAN Management Solution, at 12.5 percent. Solar Winds Network Management Software also fared well, with 6.8 percent of the ballot.

Microsoft also took the best application management product with Microsoft Operations Manager, grabbing 41.7 percent of the vote. The ISV winner and Preferred Product honors are all grouped quite closely. NetIQ's AppManager Suite took ISV winner by tallying 10.5 percent. LANDesk was close behind as a Preferred Product with 10 percent. Novell ZenWorks came in at 9.8 percent.

Performance management was another close race with more familiar names. Microsoft Operation's Manager again took this category, with 36.4 percent of the vote. NetIQ's AppManager Suite also led as ISV winner with 9.2 percent. SolarWinds' Orion Network Performance Monitor was right behind them with 9.1 percent. IBM's Tivoli Monitoring for Transaction Performance garnered 7.5 percent, rounding out the leaders.

The general network monitoring tool category was huge, with more than 20 individual products earning your votes. Microsoft Operations Manager -- the Swiss Army knife of software -- again took top honors, but by a smaller margin than the previous two categories, with 20.7 percent of the votes.

One reader likes what Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) can do, but recognizes that it's not an out-of-the-box answer. "MOM is truly an awesome solution if you have the time to set it up and customize it to your needs," he says.

The other winners for general network monitoring are familiar names -- Cisco Systems' Syslog Analyzer with 12.9 percent, HP OpenView Operations for Windows with 12.7 percent and IBM Tivoli NetView with 5.2 percent. Only one or two percentage points separated the next several products.

As more organizations introduce open source to their networks, whether running server farms or Web services or on the desktop, they need to help those systems play well with Windows. The MKS Toolkit for Developers is an interoperability favorite with 49.1 percent of the votes. Centrify DirectControl and Centeris Likewise are gaining strength with 20.1 percent and 16.7 percent of the votes, respectively.

Whether or not you watch your employee's Web usage, you still have to watch bandwidth. The best bandwidth/traffic monitoring product was a very close race, with less than a percentage point separating the leaders. Network Instruments' Observer was the top vote-getter with 22.7 percent, edging out Lightspeed Systems Total Traffic Control at 21.9 percent, and Argent Guardian with 21.3 percent.

Among our readers whose companies monitor employees' surfing habits, two clear choices emerged. Websense Enterprise won best Web usage monitor with 34.9 percent of the votes, while SurfControl Web Filter garnered 30.7 percent. SmartFilter earned a spot on the leaderboard with 6.8 percent.

Compliance and Asset Management
In this era of Sarbanes-Oxley, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and outside auditing, asset management has never been more important. Altiris is the runaway winner in this category. Its Asset Management Suite took the award for best asset management/ resource inventory product with 29.9 percent of the vote. Some singled out Altiris Inventory Solution with 16 percent. Numara's (formerly Intuit) Track-It earned 11.1 percent.

Track-It is gaining traction particularly well in smaller organizations. "We have a department secretary who records everything in Track-It," says one reader from a small state government agency.

Microsoft showed its strength again in the license management category, earning top honors with Microsoft Systems Management Server taking a whopping 61.3 percent of the vote. Altiris was also strong, locking up the next two spots with its Altiris Compliance Suite at 14 percent, and Altiris Server Provisioning Suite at 7.5 percent. iInventory rounded out the leaders with 5.3 percent.

Compliance is another critical category that continues to gain importance. For best compliance tools, 22.4 percent chose the NetIQ Security Compliance Suite (Security Manager and Vulnerability Manager) as the winner. Symantec/Bindview came in next with 17 percent. Shavlik's NetChk Compliance tallied 15.8 percent.

The battle for best virtual server was a clash of two titans -- VMware and Microsoft. VMware's GSX Server won with 47.5 percent of the vote. Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005 came in right behind that with 45.8 percent.

Those same two titans clashed again for best virtual PC product. VMware took a wider lead with its VMware Workstation Edition earning 58.7 percent. Microsoft Connectix Virtual PC for Windows followed with 36.1 percent of the votes.

There was really only one titan rolling over the rest in the battle for best non-Microsoft browser. Firefox dominated with 74.3 percent of the votes, which earned the highest number of votes for a single product. Mozilla tied with Netscape Navigator in second place, with 7.6 percent.

When it comes to SQL tools, you clearly trust the source. Microsoft wins the SQL tool category with 60.7 percent. SQL Power Tools is the ISV winner with 13.7 percent of the votes. Rounding out the leaders is Quest Software's Spotlight on SQL Server with 9.4 percent and Embarcadero Technology's ER Studio with 2.4 percent.

Day-to-Day Tools
Your administration tools represent another "have to have" category. These are the tools you use every day to keep the lights on. You gave us your top picks for migration, server migration, Group Policy manager, disk defragmentation and drive monitoring, remote troubleshooting, network automation and batch processing, scripting, patch management, application sharing and application conflict testing tools.

Migration
Quest wins with its Enterprise Migration Manager earning 18.2 percent. Altiris took both preferred product spots with its Deployment Solution earning 10.4 percent and its Client Management Suite bringing in 7.4 percent.

Server Migration
Quest also won as the best server migration product with its Migration Suite for Active Directory/Exchange, earning 18.8 percent. As it did in the general migration category, Altiris Deployment Solution came in second and Client Management Suite third, with 15 percent and 7 percent of the votes, respectively.

Group Policy Manager
Microsoft's free Group Policy Management Console dominated the competition with 50.3 percent of the vote. ScriptLogic was the ISV winner with 8.5 percent, and NetIQ rounded out the top three, with its Group Policy Administrator earning 7.5 percent.

Disk Defragmentation and Drive Monitoring
Diskeeper Corp.'s Diskeeper was the clear choice here, with 37.9 percent of voters giving it top marks. Next came Winternals Defrag Manager with 24.4 percent, and Raxco PerfectDisk with 6.2 percent.

Remote Troubleshooting
Altiris Carbon Copy won the blue ribbon, with 15.3 percent of the votes. Close behind were Netopia's Timbuktu with 13.9 percent and NetSupport Manager at 12.8 percent.

Network Automation
You liked ScriptLogic's Desktop Authority best, giving it 31.2 percent of your votes. HP Openview Operations for Windows was next with 24.3 percent, and the MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers rounded out the top vote-getters at 10.6 percent.

Scripting
Sapien's PrimalScript won the hearts of scripters, with 26.4 percent of the tally, while iTripoli AdminSciptEditor was close behind at 22.9 percent. XLNow OnScript showed well with 13.9 percent.

Patch Management
You obviously like Microsoft's efforts here, as its Software Update Services massacred the competition with 55.8 percent of the ballot. Shavlik Technologies' HFNetChkPro was the ISV winner with 9.6 percent. Altiris Patch Management Solution came in with 7.3 percent and PatchLink Update was next with 5.7 percent of the votes.

Application Sharing
Another clash of two titans: Citrix Metaframe edged out Microsoft Terminal Services, 49.8 percent to 47.1 percent. No other entries were even close.

Application Conflict Testing
Macrovision's FLEXnet AdminStudio was the big dog here, gobbling up 48 percent of the votes. Also showing well were OnDemand Software's WinInstall, at 20.9 percent and Altiris Package Studio with 17.5 percent.

Building Blocks
Installing and deploying new software is another fundamental category, requiring trusted tools that perform predictably and consistently. Here's what you're using in your arsenal:

Software Distribution
This was another Microsoft-dominated category, with Systems Management Server leaving everyone in its dust with 62.4 percent of the votes. IBM's Tivoli Netview Distribution Manager was the ISV winner with 8.2 percent, while CA UniCenter snatched 5.2 percent.

Software Packaging
Macrovision FLEXnet AdminStudio torched the field with 61.3 percent. The top two runners-up were Altiris Package Studio with 16.9 percent and OnDemand Software's WinInstall with 14.6 percent.

Drive Imaging
Symantec Ghost, last year's single winner for most votes (and this year's close second), handily won its category again with 67.7 percent. Acronis True Image garnered 10.7 percent and Altiris Migration Suite earned 5.9 percent of the ballot.

Lockdown
Security is another essential aspect of any technology plan. The question these days isn't so much whether or what to deploy, but how much and covering which entry points. Experts agree a mix of technologies is best. Here's a look at what you're using to lock your network down:

Firewall -- Hardware-based
Cisco Systems PIX series, as it has for years, is the hands-down winner, tallying 55.1 percent of the vote. Sonicwall Pro and TZ series and Symantec's VelociRaptor won 12.5 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively.

Firewall -- Software-based
In a competitive race, Microsoft ISA Server 2004 finished first with 30.8 percent. Check Point Software Technologies was the ISV winner with its Firewall-1, earning 22.5 percent of the vote. Symantec Enterprise Firewall was the only other significant vote-gatherer, with 18.9 percent.

Security Auditing
GFI LANguard Security Event Log Monitor took top honors in a closely contested category, with 15.9 percent of the vote. Tripwire for Servers took 11.4 percent of the vote and CA eTrust Access Control got 10.8 percent.

Intrusion Detection
The Cisco Secure Intrusion Detection System was the top choice here, with 33.1 percent of the vote. Popular open source contender Snort came in second with a 17.9 percent vote, while Network ICE's BlackICE Pro cracked double-digits with 10.1 percent.

Intrusion Prevention
Cisco continues its run with Okena StormWatch, used by 28.6 percent of respondents. Network Associates' Intrushield grabbed 10.1 percent and Internet Security Systems 8.9 percent.

Smart Card/Biometric/Two-factor Authentication
You chose RSA SecureID by a mile over the other contenders, with a 58.6 percent vote. ActivCard Trinity and Griffin Technologies Securikey Professional Edition each snagged 5.3 percent of the vote.

Secure Messaging
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 was the platform of choice for secure messaging, taking home a 31.1 percent vote. Grabbing 8 percent of the vote, Barracuda Networks' Spam Firewall was the ISV winner, while Symantec/Norton Internet Security 2006 made the top three with 6.6 percent.

Anti-Virus
Symantec AntiVirus dominated here, as the choice of 40.4 percent of readers. McAfee GroupShield was next at 18 percent and Trend Micro's InterScan Enterprise Suite earned 14.6 percent.

Anti-Spyware
McAfee AntiSpyware won this growing category, earning 17.9 percent. Trend Micro Anti-Spyware grabbed 16 percent of the vote, while Webroot came in third with 11.6 percent.

Safekeeping
As disaster recovery and compliance become bigger issues every year, having your data in a safe and secure location is a strategic must. Storage and backup systems may not be the most exciting category, but they're a critical component of any IT infrastructure.

Backup System
Symantec/Veritas wiped out the competition, taking the top two slots. BackupExec dominated with 40 percent, and NetBackup was second, with 13 percent. CA BrightStor brought in 8.2 percent of the votes.

Storage Management
Readers also went with Symantec/ Veritas here, with Storage Central preferred by 24.3 percent. EMC's ControlCenter SRM garnered 19.1 percent and Symantec/Veritas Volume Manager was the choice of 10.7 percent.

Disaster Recovery
The Symantec/Veritas duo continued its stranglehold, with Backup Exec earning 24.6 percent and NetBackup managing 14.4 percent. Winternals Recovery Manager chipped in with 8.5 percent.

Clustering and Failover
Clearly, it's easier to use a Microsoft solution for something as closely tied to the OS as clustering. You chose Microsoft Windows Server Clustering Services by a huge margin, with 60.2 percent of the vote. The ISV winner was Symantec/ Veritas Cluster Server with 16.5 percent. No other products could garner double-digit support.

Load Balancing
The same argument can be made for an operation like load balancing, and the results reflect that similarity. Microsoft Windows Server Network Load Balancing is the most popular with 57 percent of the vote. F5 Networks' 3-DNS Controller took top honors among ISVs, with 11.3 percent. Mercury LoadRunner earned 7.7 percent.

Most Reliable Server Platform
Taking the crown again, like last year, was Dell with 41.7 percent. HP finished a close second with 38.2 percent and IBM came in with 14.9 percent.

Know Your Stuff?
Training and preparing for certification is still an essential part of career growth. Here's where you prefer to get help:

Exam Preparation Product or Service
Transcender won by a healthy margin with 33.7 percent. Microsoft Press came in at 21.2 percent, with Cisco Press next at 7.8 percent.

Online, Disk-Based or Instructor-Led Training
Microsoft Press took the top spot with 27.5 percent of the vote. The ISV winner was Global Knowledge, with 14.1 percent. MeasureUp and SkillSoft earned 8.7 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively.

Windows Certification-Based Boot Camp
Global Knowledge overwhelms the others as your choice for intense training, with 48.5 percent of the ballot. Next up was The Training Camp at 16.6 percent and GlobalNet Training, third at 15.1 percent.

Mountain View, Calif., April 13, 2006 – Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced that the Barracuda Web Filter was named Best Security Solution in the “LinuxWorld Product Excellence Awards” at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in Boston earlier this month. The Barracuda Web Filter was selected for this distinction over solutions from Configuresoft and Novell.

Built on a hardened Linux platform, the Barracuda Web Filter is the first focused gateway appliance for comprehensive content filtering and powerful spyware, malware, and adware protection. Available in five models, the plug-and-play appliance combines preventative, reactive and proactive measures to form a complete anti-spyware and Web content filtering solution for businesses of all sizes. In addition, the Barracuda Web Filter also offers the powerful Barracuda Spyware Removal Tool. This latest enhancement extends the Barracuda Web Filter’s ability beyond detection, identification and blocking of spyware at the gateway, to now include removal of malware from previously infected desktop computers.

“The Barracuda Web Filter truly advances the state of spyware defense by providing protection at the gateway and at the desktop,” said Mark Hinkle, editor-in-chief of LinuxWorld Magazine. “This multi-faceted approach to spyware protection and content filtering makes it one of the most powerful spyware solutions available today, and the ideal selection for the ‘Best Security Solution.’”

“LinuxWorld Product Excellence Award” winners were selected by a panel of experts at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo. Awards were given to products that demonstrated ease of configuration, scalability to task and price performance among other criteria. Featuring no per user license fees, the Barracuda Web Filter is the most affordable anti-spyware solution available, with prices starting at $1,599. In addition, the Barracuda Web Filter saves time and money by eliminating the productivity losses incurred with anti-spyware desktop software solutions that require individual downloading and maintenance on each PC.

“This award underscores the Barracuda Web Filter’s ease-of-use, performance, and affordability, all of which are elements that continue to make the Barracuda Web Filter a successful and powerful network security solution for businesses worldwide,” said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks.

Also at the show the Barracuda Spam Firewall 900 was listed as one of three finalists in the Best Messaging Solution category. The Barracuda Spam Firewall 900 is the latest edition to the award-winning Barracuda Spam Firewall product line and offers the largest quarantine storage capacity and the fastest throughput available for an email gateway appliance.

About the Barracuda Web Filter
Available in five models, the Barracuda Web Filter combines preventative, reactive and proactive measures to form a complete anti-spyware and content filtering solution for businesses of all sizes. Unlike the widely available desktop software solutions, the Barracuda Web Filter is easily installed and does not require the additional time, money or resources necessary for downloading and maintaining software on each individual PC. The comprehensive feature set enables the Barracuda Web Filter to block spyware downloads, prevent viruses, stop access to spyware Web sites and filter Web content. In addition, the Barracuda Web Filter can identify spyware-infected desktops, alert the administrator and enable users to remove spyware from infected Windows computers with the Barracuda Spyware Removal Tool. Hourly Energize Updates are made automatically by Barracuda Central so that the Barracuda Web Filter can block the ever-changing virus and spyware variants.

Barracuda Spam Firewall Named Editors’ Choice by Lotus Advisor Magazine

Mountain View, Calif., March 29, 2006 – Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced that its flagship product, the Barracuda Spam Firewall, received the 2006 Lotus Advisor Editors’ Choice Award in the “Administration: Messaging Management Tool” category. Lotus Advisor Magazine named the Barracuda Spam Firewall editors’ choice based on its comprehensive email protection features, aggressive pricing, and easy integration with IBM Lotus Notes and Web Access (iNotes) clients.

Lotus Advisor Magazine editors praised the Barracuda Spam Firewall for its ease of use and deployment noting that it “does 99.99 percent of the work for you, which is what an administrative tool is all about.”

In addition to working seamlessly with Lotus Notes, iNotes and Domino servers, the Barracuda Spam Firewall also offers a powerful plug-in for Lotus Notes. The plug-in enables individual users to designate emails as ‘spam’ or ‘not spam,’ as well as automatically builds personal whitelists based on previous emails sent and emails designated as ‘not spam’ by each user. These features allow Lotus Notes users to train the Barracuda Spam Firewall based on their individual email activity and preferences, and increases the Barracuda Spam Firewall’s already industry-leading spam blocking accuracy.

“More than 125 million email users worldwide are now using Lotus Notes, all of whom are bombarded with spam and viruses each day,” said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. “We are pleased that Lotus Advisor Magazine recognizes Barracuda Networks’ commitment to protecting our customers from these threats with the easy-to-use and powerful Barracuda Spam Firewall.”

Lotus Advisor Editors’ Choice Award winners were selected by a panel of Lotus software experts at Lotusphere 2006. Awards were given to the most innovative Lotus development and administrative tools. The winning products can be found online at LotusAdvisor.com and will appear in the May 2006 issue of Lotus Advisor Magazine.

“The editors of Lotus Advisor Magazine are pleased to acknowledge Barracuda Networks for its innovative product, the Barracuda Spam Firewall,” said John Hawkins, Lotus Advisor Magazine’s editorial director. “The award recognizes and celebrates strong tools and products for Lotus application architects, developers, and administrators.”

About the Barracuda Spam Firewall
The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in six models and supports from 1,000 to 30,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. Barracuda Networks also offers the Energize Update subscription service to automatically update the Barracuda Spam Firewall with the latest spam rules and virus definitions.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall 300 bested SurfControl's RiskFilter and the Vircom modusGate v3.0 in this year's contest.

"We are honored to once again take home the esteemed Well-Connected Award for best anti-spam solution," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "The Well-Connected Award recognizes not only the superior performance of the Barracuda Spam Firewall, but also the ease of use and affordability that thousands of our customers worldwide have come to depend on."

Held annually by CMP Media LLC's Network Computing, the leading magazine for IT and networking professionals, the Well-Connected Awards recognize outstanding technology products and services and represent the very best products and services the technology industry has to offer in networking. Finalists and winners are chosen by the publication's technology editors, based on products that have been tested and evaluated in their real-world labs.

"The Well-Connected Awards are the only industry awards given by technologists based on real-world product testing and evaluation," said Fritz Nelson, vice president and group publisher of the Network Computing Enterprise Architecture Group. "These awards take the pulse of the technology industry and reflect the best of what IT has to offer. This is an important distinction from any other award program - the products selected in the Well-Connected Awards are unique because they have been graded with the same criteria IT professionals use to make purchasing decisions - truly the most outstanding products and services available."

The Well-Connected Awards are only for products that have been through analysis and testing by Network Computing in the previous year from May 2004 to May 2005. In the Network Computing comparative product review which included more than 30 other spam and virus solutions, the Barracuda Spam Firewall 300 was hailed as "one of the easiest products to get running and administer," and the product design was also lauded for its close "parallel to our ideal criteria for an enterprise-class spam filter - a free product that requires no administration and stops 100 percent of spam with no false positives." The Network Computing 2005 Well-Connected Award results were listed in the April 28 issue of the magazine and winners were honored this week at an awards ceremony held at Networld+Interop 2005 in Las Vegas.

This featured transition plan is offered to customers who are looking to replace Google Postini, as Google is forcing customers to transfer their accounts to Google Apps.

Barracuda Networks is making this bold transition available on the heels of Google’s announcement that the company is retiring the Postini service by next year. According to an article on CNET1, Postini customers who choose not to transfer their accounts to Google Apps will see their Postini service terminated, leaving their inboxes open to spam, phishing attacks and other email-security threats.

"While Google is trying to push their customers to Google Apps, we recognize that many organizations want a choice," said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. "Between our pure cloud solutions, our hardware appliance and our virtual appliance deployment options, we've found we can fit into just about any customer environment fulfilling a broad spectrum of privacy requirements. We welcome Postini customers to try Barracuda Networks’ email security solutions risk free for six months, particularly as they are going through this forced transition period."

Current Postini customers have the option to stay with Google by transferring their accounts to Google Apps for email security; however, they will be required to adopt a privacy policy and will reportedly lose features like email encryption2. Postini customers who need to renew in November are being notified of the switch this month, requiring them to adopt the new changes and giving them little time to make a decision.

Why make the switch?
In addition to the cost benefits of receiving six months of email security free of charge, Barracuda Networks makes the transition from Google Postini an easy one with multiple benefits:

  • Controlled privacy – Customers concerned with privacy issues related to Google Apps can be assured that Barracuda Networks does not collect any information for the purpose of serving advertisements.
  • Attractive pricing – Barracuda Networks is known for its cost-effective solutions, with all-inclusive pricing on email security, web security, application security, next generation firewalls, storage, backup and more. Both the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall and Barracuda Email Security Service provide more competitive pricing than Google Postini.
  • Encryption and other advanced features – Barracuda Networks’ email security solutions include advanced features such as encryption and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) for no additional charge.

The Barracuda Spam Firewall wins the top pick by Network Computing

Network Computing editors invited 35 vendors of spam-filtering products to evaluate on architecture, management, end-user control, security and price, among other attributes. Of the 35 vendors invited, they tested products from 27, got usable results from 23, and include the Top 10 in this review. Barracuda Networks and the Barracuda Spam Firewall won the top pick. This is what they had to say ...

"Barracuda's was one of the easiest products to get running and administer. We simply logged on to the console and ran through a wizard to set initial IP information, then connected to the device through the Web interface to fine-tune the settings for our test. We set spam and virus definitions to update automatically every hour, but this configuration can be changed to suit your needs.

Once the accuracy test was finished, we disabled our default configuration for tagging and forwarding spam, activated antivirus scanning, and set up the built-in spam quarantine to send digests to users on a daily basis. We also set the spam-scoring thresholds to tag possible spam, quarantine likely spam, and delete definite spam. This took all of three minutes and didn't require a peek at the manual or a call to tech support.

Our tests convinced us that you don't even need an IT department to manage the Barracuda Spam Firewall. Barracuda's sales are mainly to SMBs because of low cost and ease of use, but Spam Firewall is also a favorite of large ISPs and higher education users because it is licensed per box rather than per user.

Spam Firewall has a feature called the Exchange Accelerator; this is an LDAP lookup that will work with any LDAP server. The Accelerator protects your mail server from dictionary attacks by using an LDAP query to check that the recipient of a new message has a mailbox on the mail server. If the LDAP query doesn't return a result, the appliance generates an NDR (nondelivery report) and returns the mail to the sender without wasting cycles on your mail server.

We easily set our own blacklists and whitelists. Also, when we deleted an entry from our spam digest, that message was used to train the Bayesian database to help increase accuracy. Barracuda told us that the product's next release, which should be available by the time you read this, will include user-settable quarantine thresholds."

Barracuda Spam Firewall Receives Well-Connected Awards Honor: "Best Spam Prevention Solution"

Networld + Interop, Las Vegas, NV, May 11, 2004 - Barracuda Networks, the leading provider of enterprise-class spam firewall solutions, today announced that the Barracuda Spam Firewall 300 has been awarded "Best Spam Prevention Solution" in the 10th Annual Network Computing 2004 Well-Connected Awards Competition. This was the first year that spam solutions have been considered as a separate awards sub-category by the publication.

"The Well-Connected Awards are well respected in the high-tech and networking industries, and we are especially honored to receive the first Well-Connected Award presented to a spam solutions vendor," said Dean Drako, president and CEO of Barracuda Networks. "We recognize that the spam solutions market is crowded, so to receive this honor by such an esteemed publication demonstrates that we are the price and performance leader."

The awards are only for products that have been through analysis and testing by Network Computing in the previous year from May 2003 to May 2004. The Well-Connected Award results will be listed in the May 13 issue of the magazine.

"The Well-Connected Awards are the only industry awards given by technologists based on real-world product testing and evaluation. We view all products, technologies and services from the same perspective as our readers - our peers - do," said Fritz Nelson, vice president and group publisher of Network Computing Enterprise Architecture Group. "This is an important distinction from any other award program - the products selected in the Well-Connected Awards are unique because they have been tested over an enterprise by our editors themselves. They are truly innovative solutions that work."
