How can a WAN link be used as a purely private link (VPN connections) on my Barracuda Link Balancer?

Solution #00004119

Scope:
All Barracuda Link Balancer models, firmware version 1.2 and above

Answer:
On an ongoing and frequent basis, the Barracuda Link Balancer calculates a weight for each primary and backup WAN link. The weight is the available capacity for each link based on uplink speed and current usage. When traffic from a client IP address going to a new destination IP address is detected, the weights of the links are compared and the link with the highest weight is used.

If you do not want all WAN interfaces to always be used in this way, you can change this behavior using the Link Preferences table on the Services > Bandwidth Mgmt page.

The supported link types are:

  • Primary links ? used first for outbound link balancing.
  • Backup links ? used only if the primary links are down or if they become saturated (80% of capacity).
  • Private links ? used exclusively for traffic that matches Quality of Service rules that specify those links or for Virtual Private Networks. Private links are not used at all for default outbound link balancing.
Additional Notes:
QoS rules and VPNs may use any WAN links: they are not limited to private links.
