Threat Landscape Has Evolved

Modern Internet threats are designed to evade traditional security techniques and target specific individuals, institutions, and applications with the aim to steal high-value information. For example, hackers can steal user identities through social engineering or spear phishing and then use that information to gain access to networks to install command and control spyware that can steal confidential data.

These security concerns are amplified by the increasing adoption of social media and mobile devices and popularity of BYOD policies. As a result, network administrators have to contend with network distribution and managing less restrictive policies to regulate and monitor web and application usage whereas previously, they could just block all undesirable content.

These issues are particularly challenging for medium-sized organizations and educational institutions. They often face the same security concerns as larger enterprises but have to address the issues with limited IT resources and budgets.

Traditional Security Methods are not Adequate

Traditional approaches to network security are not sufficient to deal with these threats as hackers today exploit multiple threat vectors like email, websites, social media, and applications to launch highly evasive attacks. Port-based firewalls do not provide application visibility or control. Signaturebased Intrusion Prevention Systems are not good at protecting against polymorphic attacks. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are now aimed at specific applications rendering network layer defense mechanisms obsolete. Also, the increasing complexity of deploying multiple security layers often leads to security gaps and oversights.

UTMs Have Drawbacks

Unified Threat Management (UTM) devices attempt to solve this by providing firewall, email security, web security, and VPN functions on a single appliance. In theory, these devices unify multiple security functions, simplify management, and consolidate hardware. However, in practice UTMs have severe drawbacks such as:

  • Significant throughput degradation as more features are enabled on a single appliance
  • Feature compromises to achieve a high level of consolidation
  • High Total Cost of Ownership due to reliance on custom hardware components that require frequent refreshes to meet performance requirements.

Barracuda Provides Best-of-Breed Security

Barracuda provides a federated security framework that integrates purpose-built, best-of-breed, highly scalable security solutions to protect users, networks, and data center applications. This framework is centered on Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series that provide enterprise-grade, application-aware, next-generation security for networks of any size. Other components like web and email security, web application security, and secure remote access can be easily added to the framework. All the components in the framework can be centrally managed through a cloudbased management portal for “single pane of glass” visibility and control. For maximum flexibility, the solutions can be deployed as on-premises hardware or virtual appliances, hosted cloud services, or as public cloud services on Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS platforms. This integrated approach provides the same unified security and consolidation found on UTMs without any of the performance limitations or security gaps.

Barracuda Federated Security Framework

Barracuda’s federated security framework combines cloud-scaled next-generation firewalls and feature-rich content and application security solutions with consistent user interfaces, common administration work-flows, and central management. The framework provides unified threat protection to users, networks, and data centers.

Secure Networks Against Intrusions and Regulate Applications

Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series

The Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series provides next-generation security and user-aware application visibility and control in an easy-to-use and affordable solution. It outperforms traditional firewalls and UTMs by integrating a powerful next-generation firewall appliance with scalable cloud content security. While the appliance is optimized for bandwidth-intensive tasks like packet forwarding and routing, Layer 7 application control, Intrusion Prevention (IPS), DNS/DHCP services, and VPN connectivity, the cloud component handles processor-intensive tasks like virus scanning, content filtering, and reporting.

Protect Users from Web and Email Threats

Barracuda Web Security

Barracuda web security solutions protect organizations against exposure to web-borne malware and viruses, lost user productivity, and misused bandwidth. As a comprehensive solution, they unite award-winning spyware, malware, and virus protection with a comprehensive policy and reporting engine. Advanced features ensure that organizations adapt to emerging requirements like social-network regulation, remote filtering, and visibility into SSL-encrypted traffic.

Barracuda web security solutions can be deployed as hardware and virtual appliances, as well as cloud services.

Barracuda Email Security

Barracuda email security solutions inspect all email traffic to protect organizations from emailborne threats and data leaks. As a complete email management solution, organizations have a variety of advanced data loss prevention options such as message encryption. The solution also provides email continuity through message spooling if mail servers become unavailable.

Flexible deployment options include hardware and virtual appliances, cloud services, and hybrid configurations—making this solution ideal for safeguarding organizations of any size.

Protect Data Center Applications

Barracuda Web Application Firewall

The Barracuda Web Application Firewall secures against an ever-expanding list of sophisticated web-based intrusions and attacks that target the applications hosted on web servers—and the sensitive or confidential data to which they have access. Administrators can ensure that they have the proper security in place, without the need to wait for clean code or even know how an application works to secure the applications.

The Web Application Firewall is available as a hardware and virtual appliance. It can also be deployed in secure public clouds like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

Provide Secure Remote Access

Barracuda SSL VPN

The Barracuda SSL VPN provides organizations with a flexible, reliable, and secure vehicle to connect to internal business applications, information, and network resources. Employees can connect from anywhere in the world, at any time, from any suitable device. The Barracuda SSL VPN provides the security and connectivity to deliver this access, via a web browser or mobile device; and is available as a hardware or virtual appliance.

Barracuda Cloud Control

Barracuda products are integrated with the Barracuda Cloud Control (BCC) web-based management portal, which leverages Barracuda’s global cloud infrastructure to enable organizations to centrally manage all their devices through a “single pane of glass” interface. Administrators have a global view of all their devices, as well as the ability to centrally manage policies and configuration. The intuitive interface makes it easy for organizations of all sizes to implement and manage their security policies with minimal IT overhead.
