Background

The Township of West Windsor in Mercer County, New Jersey was one of the state’s initial groups of townships. West Windsor has a population of more than 27,000. Chris Wade is responsible for the IT infrastructure of the municipal departments including administration, municipal court, public works, department of the mayor, and human services. The West Windsor Township network infrastructure consists of a headquarters with 100 users, two remote sites with 20 employees, and an Internet connection of 100 Mbps. Active Directory is used to centrally manage internal and external access to resources. Future plans include incorporating a second Internet connection for redundancy.

When the West Windsor Township’s obsolete Cisco ASA 5500 wasn’t able to handle the network throughput, Wade decided to explore other vendors. Wade wanted to also provide VPN access for remote users and wasn’t confident the Cisco ASA could handle the job.

Barracuda NextGen Firewall X added to Barracuda collection

Due to a longstanding history with Barracuda Networks, including the Barracuda Web Filter and the Barracuda Message Archiver, West Windsor decided to purchase the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X400 for its headquarters and two Barracuda NextGen Firewall X201s for its remote sites. “The Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series was an easy decision. It is easy to deploy and manage, and the technical support enables me to keep the city up and running without excessive overhead,” said Wade. He also liked the option of using Barracuda’s cloud-based Web Security Services for web filtering, antivirus, and malware scanning for his remote sites. “Not having to implement another web security device is awesome as I can keep power consumption and server space to a minimum,” he said.

"Typically, performance decreases as features are enabled. But the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series has provided me with all of the features I need, while improving overall network performance."
- Chris Wade, Network Administrator, Township of West Windsor

Wade has implemented several features that helped West Windsor vastly improve its operations. Quality of Service (QoS) for prioritization of VoIP traffic allows employees to have the highest voice quality and service. Site-to-site VPNs are used to provide third-party partners access to internal resources while providing security to other areas of the network. The reliability provided by the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series also allows Wade to reduce time and costs associated with managing the Cisco ASA. “Consultant fees of $17,000 to support my Cisco ASA were eliminated when I switched to the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series.” When Wade incorporates a second Internet connection for redundancy, he plans to leverage the automated link balancing and failover capabilities to ensure that network and application services remain available even if his primary Internet line becomes unavailable.

Barracuda NextGen Firewall Xs Exceed Expectations

Since deploying the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series in its network, enabling QoS, VPN, and web security functions has increased the township’s ability to prevent security breaches and detect malware, while increasing availability through traffic balancing and prioritization. Wade said, “Typically, performance decreases as features are enabled. But the Barracuda NextGen Firewall X-Series has provided me with all of the features I need, while improving overall network performance."
