Barracuda Message Archiver with Barracuda Cloud Storage is an all-in-one, cloud-connected archiving solution. It improves mobile user access and productivity, reduces email storage costs, and eliminates the need for PST’s while adding the ability to create a secondary copy of your archive data in the Barracuda Cloud. Barracuda Cloud Storage provides disaster recovery, access to data from anywhere through Barracuda Cloud Control, and extended storage to the cloud providing reliable secondary storage with built-in redundancy. Cloud replication for the Barracuda Message Archiver offers organizations two options, Mirror and Rotate modes, each providing their own unique advantages.

The Advantages of Cloud Replication

Enabling Cloud Storage with the Barracuda Message Archiver provides organizations with the following three things:

  • An offsite copy of archived data for disaster recovery
  • The ability to extend storage to the cloud
  • Access to archived data from anywhere

Connecting Barracuda Message Archivers to Barracuda Cloud Storage offers organizations offsite, long-term, cost-effective storage with built-in redundancy and reliability.

Mirror Mode

In a recent survey by TechValidate of current Barracuda customers, 42% responded that they do not back up their Barracuda Message Archiver. In environments where email or attachments are removed from the email server, the Barracuda Message Archiver will have the only remaining copy of that data and it is highly recommended that you back up the device.

Setting cloud replication to Mirror mode creates a secondary copy of all data stored on the Barracuda Message Archiver in Barracuda Cloud Storage. Mirror mode is ideal for organizations not currently backing up their Barracuda Message Archiver or wanting to have an offsite copy of this data on the more reliable and redundant storage that the Barracuda Cloud provides. With Mirroring, all data stored on the Barracuda Message Archiver is replicated to Barracuda Cloud Storage, creating an exact duplicate. By configuring retention policies, data reaching a certain age on the Barracuda Message Archiver can be removed from the local appliance and kept in the cloud as long-term storage. This allows organizations to extend the life of their Barracuda Message Archiver by placing historical data offsite on long-term, cost-effective storage.

By placing cloud replication in Mirror mode, organizations get a fully indexed, fully searchable secondary copy of all of their archived data in the Barracuda Cloud. In the event of an on-site disaster, the cloud-replicated archive is still fully accessible and searchable by administrators, allowing for compliance with legal requests and other typical use cases until a new unit can become operational. As soon as an on-premises unit becomes available, it can either be restored using cloud data, or used as an access point to the data already in the cloud through Federated Search. Federated Search allows your Barracuda Message Archiver to be fully operational without having to wait for data to be fully restored to the local appliance, something that could take days or weeks depending on the amount of data and available bandwidth. Barracuda customers with Instant Replacement subscriptions can be provided with a pre-loaded unit (using cloud-replicated data) in case of a disaster or hardware failure.

Rotate Mode

Setting cloud replication to Rotate mode allows the Barracuda Message Archiver to scale-up and use Barracuda Cloud Storage as a secondary tier of storage. Rotate mode is ideal for organizations that wish to move specific sets of archived data to cloud storage, not just create a duplicate copy of everything like in Mirror mode. By creating saved search retention policies, data can be removed from the Barracuda Message Archiver after a specified time period and rotated to Barracuda Cloud Storage, where you can specify how long that data remains there before being removed or it can be kept forever.

Organizations using Rotate mode with cloud replication have more control over what data is being sent to Barracuda Cloud Storage and for how long. By using Rotate mode, organizations can move data off of their local appliance into Barracuda Cloud Storage, extending the life of their Barracuda Message Archiver. Barracuda Cloud Storage offers a more reliable, long-term storage option than exporting data to local media. The data stored in the Barracuda Cloud is also indexed, searchable, and available for export, something that a local storage device is not capable of.

Another benefit that Rotate mode provides is the ability to separate data into multiple repositories using Barracuda Cloud Storage. Separation of data is often something that is required for organizations adhering to specific compliance or legal requirements. Federated Search provides the ability to search across both sets of data, local and in the cloud. Specify how long you would like to keep data on the appliance, if you’d like to remove it from the appliance or rotate it to the Barracuda Cloud, and how long you’d like to keep the data in the Barracuda Cloud after it is removed from the appliance.

Barracuda Cloud Control

Barracuda Cloud Control is a comprehensive cloud-based service that enables administrators to monitor and configure multiple Barracuda Networks products from a single console. With Barracuda Cloud Control, you can check the health of all connected devices, run reports that are generated by gathering data from all the devices, and assign roles with varied permissions to different types of users. Barracuda Cloud Control allows access to archived data that has been replicated to Barracuda Cloud Storage, from anywhere with an Internet connection, providing high availability in case of disaster.

Federated Search

Federated search allows organizations to search across multiple connected Barracuda Message Archivers and the Barracuda Cloud from a single search query and search interface. All data replicated to the Barracuda Cloud in either Mirror or Rotate mode is searchable using Federated Search. With Federated Search, the Barracuda Cloud is treated similarly to another Barracuda Message Archiver, containing its own fully indexed, fully searchable copy of all archived data. In the event of an onsite disaster, the replacement appliance can be used as an access point to the data already in the cloud through Federated Search.

Barracuda Cloud Storage Security

The Barracuda Message Archiver is deployed behind the customer’s corporate firewall and is protected by the same security measures that the customer uses to protect their primary data sources. All data transferred to and stored in the Barracuda Cloud is encrypted using AES 256-bit encryption. Data replicated to Barracuda Cloud Storage is stored in two geographically independent locations to insure complete protection from regional disasters.

Barracuda Cloud Storage Subscriptions

Barracuda Cloud Storage Subscriptions are offered in 1 TB metered offerings and easy mirrored capacities to match your Barracuda Message Archiver capacities. Subscriptions can be purchased in 1, 3, and 5 year periods and can easily be upgraded allowing for customers to grow capacities as required.

Conclusion

Barracuda Message Archiver with Barracuda Cloud Storage is an all-in-one, cloud-connected archiving solution that improves mobile user access and productivity, reduces email storage costs, and eliminates the need for PSTs while adding the ability to create a secondary copy of your archive data in the Barracuda cloud. With the integration of the Barracuda Message Archiver with Barracuda Cloud Storage, organizations have more flexibility than ever before. Replicate all archived data to Barracuda Cloud Storage with Mirror mode for disaster recovery or create a secondary tier of reliable, redundant storage with Rotate mode. Whichever option you choose, Federated Search and Barracuda Cloud Control allow you to search and retrieve archived data from anywhere and at any time.
