When deployed with a single VMware Horizon View cluster, the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC provides application-aware load balancing to enhance the performance of the cluster. It continually probes the various View servers to understand their current load; the built in Adaptive Scheduling algorithm uses this information to direct users to the servers with the least load at the given time. This scheduling has two benefits – it ensures that server resources are not left idle and all the client requests are load-balanced; since users are directed to the servers with the least load, the virtual desktops perform better, improving user experience and productivity. The net effect of this is that a smaller cluster can more efficiently serve a larger number of users.

When moving to Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, the most important requirements are availability and resilience. Any downtime will seriously impact the productivity of the organization. VMware Horizon View does not provide fault tolerance by default. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC can be deployed in a high availability cluster to front-end the server farm. It continually monitors the servers to ensure that they are healthy – if any of them goes down, the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC take it out of service, and moves users to other servers in the farm.

Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) on the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC greatly improves availability and resilience as well. Multiple VMware Horizon View server farms can be deployed with the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC front-ending them. When GSLB is turned on, the ADC directs users to the nearest server farm. If the server farm goes down, it automatically redirects users to the next nearest server farm, leading to continual availability. GSLB also improves user experience and productivity – by directing users to the nearest server farm, the ADC reduces latency, leading to faster load times.

SSL Offloading on the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC allows you to provide a secure front-end for remote users. Offloading also allows the VMware Horizon View servers to focus on delivering virtual desktops and improves their performance. Integrations with LDAP/Active Directory, and RADIUS ensure that only authorized users are allowed to login to the VDI. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC provides comprehensive traffic protection by encrypting all the connections between the VMware Horizon View connection servers and clients. Application security features ensures that all application layer attacks against your infrastructure are blocked.
