The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC

The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC is a mature application delivery controller that will allow you to scale your Lync deployment while improving its performance and securing it against application layer attacks.

Availability and resilience are the most important part of any Lync deployment. Lync servers are deployed in role-based pools across multiple data centers (Edge Server pool, Front End Server pool, a Mediation Server pool, etc.) to ensure “always-on” availability. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC enables highly available deployments of such clusters. Within a single data center, the ADC applies intelligent load balancing to prevent overloaded servers in the cluster. The built-in adaptive scheduling algorithm monitors various server parameters before initiating any connections to a specific server. Intelligent load balancing ensures optimally used server resources – no one server is overloaded with requests, while lesser number requests are sent to others.

In deployments spanning multiple data centers, the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC applies Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) to distribute traffic between geo-dispersed sites. This allows disaster recovery when a site goes down, as the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC will immediately start sending a new client to the other data centers. In addition, latency is a significant consideration for communication services such as Lync. With GSLB, the ADC will direct users to the nearest data center, reducing latency and improving user experience and productivity. When any site goes down, users are redirected to the next nearest site, guaranteeing continued access. With GSLB, you can also direct users to specific sites based on geo-IP, region, or site priority.

In both these cases, the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC ensures that any server that goes down is immediately taken out of service. Once this is done, sessions are rebalanced across the remaining servers, ensuring continued availability and service.

Publishing Lync services on the Internet requires a reverse proxy. The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC acts as a reverse proxy for the Lync Edge Server pool. In this role, it can present an HTTPS front-end to ensure that all users connect securely. When presenting an HTTPS front-end, the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC also offloads the SSL/TLS processing from the Lync servers. This reduces the performance impact on them, allowing the servers to focus on delivering Lync services to users.

The Barracuda Load Balancer ADC also secures the web front-end from application attacks and application DDoS attacks by using builtin application security features. Active Directory integration allows the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC to offload authentication to Ly nc services as well. This ensures that only authorized users can access the Lync services, and non-authorized users cannot cross the Barracuda Load Balancer ADC into the network.
