Keerpunt processes around 12,000-15,000 records every year, which all contain personal details such as employee social security numbers. Out-Dated Appliances and a Complex Interface
Keerpunt’s IT department has been using a Microsoft web filter since 2006. Being such an old device, it had a complex and difficult interface. Daniel Vleeshakker, System engineer at Keerpunt, said, “Our old web filter had relatively limited management options and slow performance. The appliance required very specific technical knowledge, and it became quite a challenge to make it function properly.”
In addition to the Microsoft web filter, Keerpunt was using a former version of the Barracuda Email Security Gateway. This model was functioning well enough, but was outdated. IT Manager Gaby Wanjon said, “We basically needed an upgraded version of our old model. It just wasn’t compatible anymore with the current security demands.”
User-Friendliness was a Key Requirement
The search for a new web security gateway and email security gateway was not a complicated one. Wanjon’s previous experience with the Barracuda Email Security Gateway was so good, he didn’t look any further for a replacement. For the new deployment, the team chose Barracuda’s Email Security Gateway Vx, with one installation on-premises and another in Keerpunt’s Amsterdam data center. The implementation process was quick. “We received a download link and entered some data to create a virtual machine. And that was it, really. At most, it took one-to-two hours to have the new appliance up and running,” said Vleeshakker.
Because of his positive experience with the previous Barracuda Email Security Gateway, Wanjon decided the new web security gateway should be a Barracuda solution as well. Installing the new it was child’s play; according to Vleeshakker, he felt that “Barracuda’s Web Security Gateway was very easy to install. It has default settings, so it was basically ‘plug & play’. It really was the easiest installation process ever.”
Impressed by the Interface and Customer Support
Keerpunt’s IT team found that both solutions to be easy to use, with significant improvements compared to their predecessors. The Barracuda Email Security Gateway has far superior performance and stays up to date thanks to regular firmware updates.

Whereas the old web filter only functioned as a forwarding proxy, the new Barracuda solution also scans the content of webpages. This means that if an employee visits an undesired website, they are redirected to a warning page that lets them know that the site is not permitted. Another big difference from the previous web filter is the user interface. Vleeshakker said, “The user interface of the Barracuda Web Security Gateway is so straight-forward that it feels like I’m managing a Facebook page. Users don’t need much technical knowledge to use the product.”
Wanjon and Vleeshakker are not only happy with the products, but they are also very impressed by Barracuda’s customer support. Vleeshakker needed to contact the support desk a couple of times and noticed that the response time was extremely quick. He explained, “When I report an issue, I get a call back within 30 minutes, which immediately solves my problem. Barracuda honestly offers the best support experience ever.”
