Jorge Cortés-Monroy, IT Director of Taylor Shellfish Farms, and his team had been operating without a data backup solution since the company’s origination over 100 years ago. All records could be lost in a disaster, and that was a risk Taylor Shellfish was not willing to take.

Backup Done Right

As a result of backup deprivation, Taylor Shellfish’s records were vulnerable and disorganized. CortésMonroy utilized external hard drives for data storage, but this did not provide adequate protection for the global food supplier. As described by the IT team, “We did not have a good backup system in place.” An ideal setup would encompass a system without removable media that could be lost, stolen, or damaged, while delivering an affordable and resourceful appliance. As the IT Director of Taylor Shellfish, Cortés-Monroy needed to decide which company could best suit his specific dataprotection needs.

"It feels good to have a dependable backup solution; my stress levels have decreased now that I don’t have to worry about our company records."
- Jorge Cortés-Monroy, IT Director, Taylor Shellfish Farms

Choosing a handful of companies to compare, Taylor Shellfish narrowed the competition down to three contenders: Symantec, Microsoft, and Barracuda Networks. Options varied between:

  • Long-term annual contracts or Barracuda’s short-term monthly commitments
  • Selective support hours with other companies or 24/7 assistance provided by highly qualified Barracuda employees
  • Training through email delivered by contending businesses or Barracuda’s on-site set-up
  • Forceful commitment to contract agreements as opposed to demo periods offered on every Barracuda product

Having appreciation for effectiveness and simplicity concerning deployment and long term implementation, Barracuda was the front runner. Affordability, as a result of no per-user licensing charges, pushed Cortés-Monroy to demo the Barracuda Backup Server 490 before making a final decision. “Having a chance to test the product out on a free 30 day trial was what initially sold us on Barracuda. If we were not totally satisfied, there was an option to send the appliance back at no cost – there was nothing to lose!” Cortés-Monroy described.

Implementation & Deployment

With their new Barracuda Backup Service up and running, Taylor Shellfish’s IT team said they have never used a product that is so simple to maintain while providing reliable security. During the first few weeks of use, the company’s file share malfunctioned – providing the IT team with an opportunity to test their brand new Barracuda gear. “Restoring all data on a temporary file server took less than 10 minutes, and we had our users up and running in less than 30 minutes,” stated Cortés-Monroy.

Experiencing a seamless demo period, Taylor Shellfish decided to purchase an additional Barracuda Backup Server 490 for company-wide guaranteed data protection. Now integrating a daily backup routine, Taylor Shellfish’s data loss worries have been put to rest. “It feels good to have a dependable backup solution; my stress levels have decreased now that I don’t have to worry about our company records,” said Cortés-Monroy.
