Businesses in the EMEA region re increasingly using Microsoft’s Office 365 solutions, but they’re doing it with a dose of fear from cyber-attacks and similar malicious actions. This was concluded in the new Barracuda Networks report, entitled “Office 365 Adoption: Drivers, Risks and Opportunities”.
Since the Equifax story broke, consumers and businesses have been hit by a wave of spam emails purporting to address security concerns. This is being done via “Secure Bank Message Impersonation — email attack delivered by spoofed messages from financial institutions,” Barracuda states.
The Equifax breach may have you watching your financial records closely for evidence of fraudulent new accounts or suspicious transactions. But you may also want to keep a close eye on your incoming email, researchers say — and here's why.
“Judging by the lack of multifactor authentication, it’s very likely that the brute force attack took place via web access to the email server,” commented Fleming Shi, senior vice president of technology at Barracuda Networks Inc.
Amid the numbing drumbeat of high-profile hacks in recent years, the one reported Thursday by Equifax stands out for its seriousness and its power to spark widespread consumer rage. The key is that the Social Security numbers of up to 143 million people may have been compromised. Social Security numbers have been exposed in some cybersecurity incidents — such as the Office of Personnel Management and Sony Pictures hacks — but not in many others, such as the massive breaches at Target, JP Morgan Chase and Yahoo.
Security researchers are warning of another major crypto-ransomware campaign which has so far been observed attacking 20 million user inboxes. The threat, discovered in the second half of this week, arrives as many similar ransomware attacks do in the form of an unsolicited email.
A large malspam campaign using spoofed email addresses has attempted to infect recipients with Locky ransomware in roughly 20 million detected attacks since Tuesday, researchers from Barracuda Networks have reported.
Office 365, Microsoft’s software-as-a-service productivity software suite popular with corporate users, is increasingly becoming attackers’ preferred way into business networks, Barracuda researchers warn.
The ubiquity of Microsoft’s Office 365 is making it a favorite target of cyber criminals, who are devising increasingly elaborate counterfeit email and website templates to steal user credentials and launch attacks from within organizations.
US-CERT warned users to remain vigilant for malicious cyberactivity centered around Hurricane Harvey including exercising caution with any storm-related emails, attachments, or hyperlinks, even those appearing to originate from trusted sources.
A Barracuda report released Aug. 30 said that bad actors are using spear-phishing, account compromise, and insider impersonation to target Office 365 users.
Both Federal and state governments use Office 365 for reasons such as cost savings, security, privacy, and accessibility. The State of New York saved $3 million a year when it adopted Office 365 and the city of Chicago experienced an 80 percent decrease in cost per employee. Microsoft also restricts content so it’s only shared with intended users, and contains tools to make its technology accessible to people who are visually impaired, deaf, or hard of hearing.
With over 100 million monthly subscribers, it's not surprising that Office 365 is a popular target when it comes to attempting to steal credentials. A new report from Barracuda Networks looks at how phishers are sending out authentic-looking emails purporting to be from Microsoft asking users to reactivate their accounts.
Cybercriminals are targeting account login credentials of Microsoft Office 365, with its more than 100 million monthly active subscribers, to ultimately launch attacks from within organization, including financial institutions.
Cybercriminals go where the users are. Office 365, which has more than 100 million active monthly subscribers, has become a hotspot for compelling and personalized cyberattacks. Users trust emails from coworkers, especially those with the correct corporate email address.
Microsoft Office 365, which has more than 100 million monthly active subscribers—is the target of a widespread credential-harvesting campaign, where attackers attempt to steal logins and ultimately launch attacks from within an organization.
Barracuda Backup is an integrated end-to-end solution that provides customers, resellers, and MSPs with the ability to replicate to their own AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) bucket – giving them the ability to choose where their data resides while also affording them control over their replicated backup data
HR recruiters must be vigilant against a new, more targeted type of cyberattack, such as a recent incident involving a phony LinkedIn profile. HR is particularly vulnerable because it has access to employees’ private information, like their W-2s. Cybercriminals are moving from mass attacks—"spamming and hoping” that some minuscule percentage of email recipients will open the fake emails—to “spearfishing,” a more specific approach, Asaf Cidon, vice president of content security services at Campbell, Calif.-based Barracuda Networks, told Bloomberg BNA
Today Barracuda Networks, Inc. announced that its Barracuda Backup can now replicate data securely and efficiently to AWS. This works for data that resides on either physical or virtual backup appliance. This gives customers more flexibility in their choice of replication targets and is especially beneficial to customers of both Barracuda and Amazon.
Barracuda Networks, a provider of cloud-enabled security and data protectionsolutions, has added the ability to replicate data from either an on-premises physical or virtual backup appliance to AWS. "There are a number of definitions for "data protection," but the important thing to remember is that it involves much more than simply running a backup. Proper data protection is included in security planning - it includes business continuity and disaster recovery planning, as well as the many security practices involved in preventing unauthorized access. Comprehensive data recovery involves data availability AND data accessibility at all times," said Rod Mathews, SVP and GM of data protection, Barracuda.
"The Microsoft Recycle Bin is a nice feature, but its job is to help the organization safeguard against accidental data loss," says Rod Mathews, SVP and general manager of data protection at Barracuda Networks. "It's not meant to be a data recovery solution."

“CXOs may be protected by extensive cybersecurity training; on the other hand, gatekeepers, such as administrative assistants, who screen and filter through incoming requests, calls and e-mails before escalating to the top, often are moving quickly and have not received the security education required to filter out phishing attacks on their own,” said Asaf Cidon, vice president of content security services at cybersecurity vendor Barracuda Networks
So the question becomes, what can small businesses do to avoid falling victims to these attacks? Small Business Trends talked with Mike Van Pelt, threat analysis engineer at the Barracuda Networks in San Francisco.
According to a survey from Barracuda, phishing—and particularly spear phishing—has become a lucrative art. The attackers also do not discriminate based on company size. Email remains one of the most widely used business communications tools.
Asaf Cidon, who studies ransomware and a vice president at the security company Barracuda Networks, said that criminals become sophisticated, particularly in choosing their victims. Hackers attack a specific department of the company.
